 MYTHS & LEGENDS

KINKED TAILS & CROSSED EYES.

(legend)

Legend says that way back when there was only 2 Siamese cats in Siam, Tien and Chula, all the men left home to defend the Kingdom. Tien and Chula were left to guard the temple and Buddha's golden goblet. Tien and Chula  mated, but Tien became restless and set off in search of a priest to take over the guarding of the temple. Chula became so consumed with her responsibility that she never once lifted her gaze from the goblet, and wrapped her tail around it tightly in case she fell asleep. Soon Chula was to give birth to her kittens, and they all appeared with the same characteristics that she had acquired while on guard. They all had kinked tails and crossed eyes.

Another story tells of the Princess that used the cats tail as a ring holder while she bathed, the kink in the tail stopped the rings being lost.

Both nice stories, but highly unlikely, breeders have worked for many years to try and breed both these traits out of the Siamese. Occasionally you still see slight crossed eyes or minor kinks.

NASTY

(Myth)

This is just so not true about the Siamese, they are a most loving and loyal,  people oriented cats, who will seek out humans where ever they go. They bond very strongly to their human families. They love company and often become attached to one particular human in the family. My own cats, sleep on the beds of their choosing with the family member (servant) of their choice, they follow us to the bathroom, greet us at the door when we come home, and cry if they suddenly wake up and cant find us, then come running when we call them.  Nasty ?? I don't think so. I have never seen my cats unsheath their claws or bite, ever.

SNEAKY

(Myth)

Huh !!! How any one could be sneaky when wearing hob nail boots is beyond me !!! Siamese are NOT sneaky, (I think there is two particular well known cartoon cats  that might have started this rumour) I have found my own Si's are far from sneaky, their to confident to go sneaking  about for any thing, if they want something, they're right in your face asking for it, or alternatively, swiping it from under your nose, like it was put there just for them. I've told Mia a hundred times, she will not catch the fly if she "runs down the hall full pelt, sounding like a herd of elephants on a rampage, quietly is best"

If they climb, (and they do), they jump down and land with a THUD, not a thud. If they ask for something, you WILL hear them.  But they will always ask politely.

So no, sneaky is not their style.

TRUTH

Siamese are highly intelligent, loyal and loving. They are gentle, affectionate, and love being in the midst of everything, they are mischief on four legs. Just when you sit to read the paper, they will lay on it. If you are working, they will be sticky nosing around to see what you are doing. If you are painting (see our photo page) they will be up the ladder sitting on your shoulder, supervising your work. They will play for hours or at least until THEY decide enough is enough. They will growl a warning when a stranger approaches, mine are great "watch cats".

Who loves ya baby ?

Oh, and one more thing, if you lose your Siamese. Look up ! Yes up, on top of cupboards, on top of doors, some of them actually manage to sleep on top of open doors. They wont be to far away.
